Department of Chemistry, Saurashtra University
Department of Chemistry was established in 1979 on the main campus and started as a single faculty department in the subject of chemistry for students mainly coming from the rural background and imparts the necessary skills required for the grooming of chemical industries in this western part of the country, for creating self-entrepreneurs and also churn out academicians and researchers who can take up jobs in educational institutes and research laboratories. With a small beginning, the path for progress and development was smooth and gradual. Today, we are one of the top departments in the state of Gujarat. The department has excelled in teaching and research. More than 3000 students were awarded an M. Sc. degree in different branches of specialization, namely organic, inorganic, physical, and analytical chemistry. We also run the PG diploma PGDSAIT. The growth of the department is synonymous with the setting up and evolution of giant drug and Chemical industries in the surrounding environs.
About Saurashtra University, Rajkot
Saurashtra University was created in response to a rigorous demand for a separate university from Gujarat University (Ahmedabad) by eminent educationists and freedom fighters of the Saurashtra region. The demand was more prominent after the creation of Gujarat state on May 1, 1961. The Saurashtra University Act was passed by the Legislative Assembly of Gujarat in the year 1965(Gujarat Act No. 39 of 1965). Saurashtra University, established on 23rd May, 1967, has two headquarters in the initial stage, i.e., Rajkot and Bhavnagar. After the incorporation of the Bhavnagar University, Rajkot became the sole headquarters of the Saurashtra University. The campus of the University is spread over 363 acres of land. The present jurisdiction of the University includes Amreli, Jamnagar, Rajkot, Surendra Nagar, and Morbi districts. It has 29 Post Graduate Departments on its campus and 285 affiliated colleges and 01 autonomous college. It has implemented the NEP-2020 curriculum since 2023-24 at the UG level. Saurashtra University is one of the 35 universities in India to be conferred with PM-USHA MERU status.
